Cr Brian McGurk was first elected to the Nelson City Council in the 2013 local elections. Prior to his election to Council, Brian retired from the New Zealand Police after 35 years service; including eight years as the Nelson Bays Area Commander and operational service in Afghanistan with the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL).

Brian is the Chair of the Planning and Regulatory Committee and a member of the Governance Committee, the Audit, Risk and Finance Sub-committee and Hearings Panel.

Brian is also the Chairperson of the Nelson Biodiversity Forum and a member of the Nelson Regional Land Transport Committee.  Brian also represents the Council at Community Action Youth and Drugs (CAYAD), the Nelson Safer Community Council and Safe at the Top Coalition.

Brian has also served on several of Council’s working parties, including the Woodburner Review, Stoke Renewal and Development Contributions Policy Review. 

Brian is also a law graduate from the University of Canterbury and has been admitted as barrister and solicitor. He also holds the Making Good Decisions certificate and has qualified as a Hearings Commissioner.

Brian is a member of the Whakatu Rotary Club. His other interests include swimming, both as an official and open water competitor and cycling, on the road and enjoying the tracks and trails around Nelson. 

Brian is married to Denise and they have two adult sons.
