Option for the Suter redevelopment to go out for feedback

Following feedback on the Queens Gardens Landscape Conservation Plan and a Landscape Assessment report on the possible effect of the proposed Suter Art Gallery redevelopment proposal on the Gardens, Council has decided to continue to support the redevelopment and retain funding in the draft Long Term Plan.

The community will have another opportunity to provide feedback through the Long Term Plan on the issue. There has been much interest in the fate of two oak trees on the Suter grounds that would need to be removed to make way for the redevelopment but Council has also been mindful of wider landscape issues impacting on the relationship between the Gardens and the Suter.

After much discussion and hearing the views of many interested parties, Council agreed it wished to continue to support the Suter redevelopment but is looking for more work on landscape plans to ensure the project is sympathetic to this important Nelson park.

This is just one of the important issues that the community will be asked for feedback on when the Long Term Plan is released on 16 April. Everyone is encouraged to take part in this important democratic process.
