Urban water restrictions now in place

Due to the lack of significant rainfall and dropping water levels at the Maitai Dam, Nelson City Council introduced stage one water restrictions in all urban areas, on Monday 18 December 2017.

Stage one restrictions allow odd numbered houses to use sprinklers on odd numbered calendar days only and vice versa for even numbered houses.

The restrictions apply to the use of sprinklers on gardens, lawns and orchards, but do not at this stage apply to areas used extensively by the public, such as bowling greens, golf course greens, cricket pitches and public gardens.

Handheld watering is still permitted but only one hose may be used at a time.

With low recent rainfall and the forecast of a long dry summer, there is a need to impose water restrictions now to ensure long-term water supply for essential use.

All residents and businesses are urged to comply with these water saving measures as reducing water use now may avoid the need for further severe restrictions later.

Any further reductions that residents can make on a voluntary basis will be a great help. Get some handy tips on water conservation here.

Richmond Water Restrictions

Nelson City Council ratepayers on the northern side of Champion Road receive water from Tasman District Council’s supply and are therefore covered by the Tasman District Council water restrictions that are now in place.

Currently, only handheld watering of productive gardens every second day is permitted according to your house number – i.e., if you have an even house number you may water on the even numbered calendar dates. Keep up to date with the Tasman District Council water restrictions on their website
