Caring for our streams
Nelson streams pass through diverse landscapes on their way from the mountains to the sea. Along the way livestock traipse through them and erode their banks, stormwater runs off from our urban roads and carparks, people wash chemicals into them via drains, and litter is discarded into them carelessly.
Despite all these damaging impacts, our streams contain many unique creatures, some of which are nationally rare but which still manage to survive in our urban and rural waterways.
Nelson Nature aims to increase the abundance and diversity of our native fish populations (insert hyperlink to native fish page), through a range of measures such as riparian fencing programmes, planting for both fish and bird habitat, and reducing contamination.
