Isaac Construction to assist Bridge to Better project team
Nelson City Council is pleased to announce Isaac Construction has been selected as the preferred contractor through an ECI tender process to join the Bridge to Better project as the detailed design and planning for the project continues.
Isaac Construction has worked on a range of projects focused on urban spaces, including the redevelopment of George Street in Dunedin and the Te Kaha Surrounding Streets in Christchurch. They will be working alongside the Bridge to Better project team to provide practical insights on stakeholder engagement, construction methodology, materials, and timelines.
Isaac Construction will help refine the design, identify potential challenges early, design construction mitigation plans and ensure the project is both cost-effective and efficiently delivered when construction begins.
The Bridge to Better project aims to support investment and housing opportunities in Nelson's city centre by addressing critical infrastructure needs and transforming Bridge Street into a vibrant, people-friendly space.
Deputy Mayor Rohan O’Neill-Stevens, Chair of the City Revitalisation Taskforce, says Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) has a strong track record of ensuring a major project runs smoothly.
“The only sensible approach is to bring in an experienced construction company at this stage of the project as they can provide an extra layer of hands-on experience that is invaluable for detailed design and disruption mitigation.
Isaac Construction brings a wealth of experience to the table highlighted by the work they have done to deliver the new look George Street in Dunedin.”
Isaac Construction’s Contractor Lead, Quintin Rolston, says “It is an absolute privilege and responsibility to be selected as the ECI contractor for the Bridge to Better project with Nelson City Council. Time and again, we find that early involvement allows us to test and challenge the status quo, project designs, delivery strategy, and project planning early enough to make adjustments and truly maximise the delivery success of what will be a transformational project for the city of Nelson.”
Before work begins on Bridge Street itself, key infrastructure upgrades will be carried out to support the wider project. This includes the current upgrades to the water supply along Bridge Street East, Collingwood Street and Halifax Street, to increase the size of the pipes and improve water flow, enhance fire resilience, and support future growth in the city centre.
In April, enabling work will start in preparation for the installation of a floodgate at Saltwater Creek to help manage stormwater during heavy rain events and tides, reducing the risk of flooding in the city by preventing high tides and floodwater from backing up in the system.
