Carpooling into the CBD

You can save on parking and petrol by carpooling into the CBD - grab a friend and enjoy the drive into town together.

Why carpool?

If you’re not convinced that carpooling is right for you, here are some benefits to it:

  • You’ll save money – you’ll save on petrol, parking fees and wear and tear on your vehicle.
  • It’s more sociable – you can make new friends or create stronger bonds with colleagues when you travel together.
  • Makes you more mobile – if you don’t have a car or can’t drive, joining a carpool gives you another convenient transport option.
  • It’s kinder to the environment - carpooling means fewer cars on the road, which means less traffic congestion and less damage to the environment.

Free Carpark Locations for Carpooling

The Council has a free parking carpool system for those who work in the city centre. Permits are issued for a maximum period of 12 months from 1 November to 31 October.

It’s super easy to sign up. You can do it online or call our Customer Service Centre at 03 546 0200. Each person registered gets a permit that must be displayed on the dashboard of the car you carpool in that day.

Parking spaces in the three designated areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If any spots are still open by 10am, they will then be available for general public use.

Locations

There are three parking locations for free carpooling in the city:

Criteria for carpooling

  • There must be two or more people in each group
  • At least two people in the group must have vehicles registered in their names
  • Applicants must work in the Nelson city centre

Getting your carpool up and running smoothly

Council has a pamphlet available with lots of handy hints for getting your carpool up and running smoothly. It lays out some things you need to discuss with your group. For instance, decide together on:

  • Who will drive (and whether you take turns)
  • Drop off and pick up points
  • If it’s okay to stop along the way, how long you’ll wait for latecomers
  • A backup plan in case of emergency
  • How to share the costs, whether eating, drinking or music is allowed during your commute

It’s important to sort out these ground rules ahead of time. Give your carpool a couple of weeks for a good routine to establish.

Ways to register for a free carpool space

Apart from registering online above or by calling 03 546 0200, you can also download the Carpooling Registration Form, fill it out and return via one of the following:

  • Email: carpool@ncc.govt.nzwith your completed form.
  • Post: to Nelson City Council, PO Box 645, Nelson, or drop it in-person at our Customer Service Centre. Directions are on the form.

Renewing an existing registration

Fill out the same registration form, using the same directions, but tick the 'Renewal' box.

Parking Fine

Can I receive a parking fine for not complying with the free parking requirements?

Yes. An infringement notice will be issued for the following reasons:

  • Failure to display the permit and at least two registration cards (with different vehicle registration numbers) in free-parking areas is subject to a parking infringement notice and an instant $70 fine.
  • Parking wardens monitoring the free parking areas will check compliance with carpool free parking conditions – vehicle registration, permit, displaying up-to-date registration cards and that your online carpool has not expired. Non-compliance is subject to an instant fine of $70.

Users of the free parking areas carpooling are advised that, under the Council Parking and Vehicle Control Bylaw, any use of the allocated areas for anything other than the parking of carpool vehicles will attract an instant parking fine.
