An Orange heavy rain warning has been issued for Nelson this Thurs 3 April. Prepare for heavy rainfall and the possibility of rapidly rising rivers, streams and surface flooding. Please clear gutters and roadside grates to keep storm drains clear. We will share updates here and on our Facebook page.

How You Can Help

There are a range of ways that you can help achieve the goals of Project Mahitahi, either as an individual, a community, or an organisation.

Planting in the Mahitahi catchment

If you are a landowner, you may consider including plants endemic to the Maitai Mahitahi valley as part of your planting schemes and restoration projects.

The Living Heritage: Growing Native Plants in Nelson guide provides useful information about the different ecosystems in the wider Nelson Whakatū Region.

Pest plants and pest animals are an ongoing challenge for both restoration plantings and established native bush. Removing pest plants effectively will help contribute to the wider gains being made in Project Mahitahi plantings. You may also wish to consider targeting pest animals on your property by trapping rats and mustelids that impact our bird life, or for those working on larger sites and land areas, working with your neighbours to focus on browsing animals including possums and goats.
