Mountain Biking
Nelson has a long history of mountain biking going back over 30 years and is proud to be one of only six Gold Standard mountain bike centres in the World. We have a wide variety of easily accessed high quality trails suited to all skill levels. This activity occurs on both Council reserve land and private land. In the Whakatū Nelson district, this private land is owned by Ngāti Koata, while in the wider Tasman Bay area mountain biking occurs on Tasman District Council land, Department of Conservation land and private land.
Following an agreement between Nelson City Council and Ngāti Koata in 2024, the public can access Waitarake, Koata Park and Fringed Hill trail areas for recreation.
Visit Nelson Mountain Bike Club to see maps of the trail network and current trail status information.
Nelson Mountain Bike Club is one of the largest in the world with over 3000 annual paid members – the club helps build and maintain our trails, manages Wairoa Gorge Mountain Bike Park and runs a wide variety of events.
