Biosecurity and Marine Reserves

Conduct around Marine mammals and Reserves

Marine mammals

  • Power boats and all other vessels must slow down to no wake speed within 300m of any marine mammal.
  • Make sure there are no more than three vessels within 300m.
  • Approach from a direction that is parallel and slightly to the rear.
  • Do not circle the marine mammals, obstruct their path or cut through any groups.
  • Idle slowly away.

Horoirangi Marine Reserve

This Reserve is located just off the Glen, Atawhai, and before Pepin Island. Its perimeter is marked by yellow buoys.

The public is welcome and encouraged to enjoy marine reserves. In all marine reserves you may dive, snorkel, take photos, swim, kayak, anchor (with care) and navigate through these areas.

Protect our Marine Reserves by following these rules:

  • No fishing of any kind.
  • Don't take or kill marine life.
  • Don't remove or disturb any marine life or materials.
  • Don't feed fish - it disturbs their natural behaviour.
  • Take care when anchoring to avoid damaging the sea floor.
