How to Vote

Make sure you’re enrolled to vote to have your say in this year's local elections.

The voting period starts on Friday 16 September 2016. Election day is Saturday 8 October 2016 and voting closes at midday on that day. 

How to Enrol to vote

You are entitled to vote in the local authority elections held where you live, as well as in the local authority elections held where you own a property - if that is different from where you live. To vote in a local authority election you must be –

  • Enrolled as a parliamentary elector, at an address in the district or city where you live.
  • Enrolled as a ratepayer elector for a property you own that is in a different district or city from where you live.

Residential roll

If you're a resident of Nelson City and already enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll for the general election, you're automatically enrolled to vote in the 2016 local elections.

If you're not on the parliamentary electoral roll in the Nelson City area and want to enrol, or if you're not sure if you're enrolled and want to check, visit www.elections.org.nz/enrol or call 0800 36 76 56.

To get an enrolment form, pop into any PostShop or freetext your name and address to 3676.

Non Residential Roll ('Ratepayer Electors')

If you own and pay rates on a property in Nelson City, but don’t live in the area, you may be eligible to enrol on the non-resident ratepayer electoral roll.

A company or society paying property rates can also qualify as a ratepayer elector.
